Objectives & practical information

The Master in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics program aims to extend and to deep the knowledge acquired during the basic orthodontics education to become specialist in Orthodontics.

Knowledge that must be acquired:

  • Control of the child conduct
  • Growth and craniofacial development
  • Biomechanics principles. Correlation between diagnosis and orthodontics treatment: cephalometric analysis and biomechanics. Visual objectives of treatment
  • Bioprogressive technique: treatment of the malocclusions of class I, II and III. Orthodontics techniques.
  • Preventive measures during the treatment.
  • Management of the developing occlusion
  • Historical evolution of the orthodontics appliances. Appliance design and construction. Auxiliary appliances.
  • Retention and relapse.
  • Orthodontics in children (removable, fixed, functional and interceptive)
  • Orthodontics in adults (conventional techniques, self-ligation, invisible aligners, skeletal anchorage)
  • Relations between Orthodontics and other specialties (Periodontics, Oral Surgery, Orthognathic Surgery, Aesthetics and Prosthetics).
  • Last advances in Orthodontics.
  • Education of investigation techniques.
  • Publication of a scientific article.

DEGREE AWARDED

After finishing the complete program of the Master of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the UB (200 ECTS), students will have obtained, in accordance with the new Royal Decree 822/2021, the following three own degrees from the University of Barcelona:

  1. Specialization Diploma “Initiation to Orthodontics” (30 ECTS). First diploma leading to the Master of Permanent Training in Orthodontics.
  2. Specialization Diploma “Diagnosis and Treatment Plan in Orthodontics” (50 ECTS). Second diploma leading to the Master of Permanent Training in Orthodontics. Previously it is mandatory to have completed the Specialization Diploma “Introduction to Orthodontics”
  3. Master of Permanent Training in Orthodontics & Dentofacial orthopaedics (120 ECTS). Previously it is mandatory to have completed the two Specialization Diplomas: “Introduction to Orthodontics” and “Diagnosis and Treatment Plan in Orthodontics”.

  • Graduates in Medicine, in the specialty of Stomatology

DURATION 

3,5 years: 3 academic years (from January to December) full time + 1 fourth year (from January to April approximately) during which the students present their TFM (Master’s Thesis), finish patients in treatment and continue attending emergencies at the HOUB.

 

LANGUAGES

Spanish (Some few lectures in Catalan or English). A good command of Spanish is necessary (B2.1 or B2.2 / advanced level recommended) in order to follow lectures and assist patients at the Dentistry Hospital UB.

34th Edition MASTER IN ORTHODONTICS (2025 – 2028): Practical information

CALENDAR AND SCHEDULE

First course:

2025: From mid-January until December. Variable schedule: Monday to Friday, 5 mornings and 4 afternoons

Second course:

2026: From January to December. Variable schedule: Monday to Friday, 5 mornings and 3 or 4 afternoons

Third course:

2027: From January to December before Christmas. Variable schedule: Monday to Friday, 4 mornings and 3 or 4 afternoons

Fourth course:

2028: From January to April (approximately). Variable schedule: one morning a week of clinical practice to finish cases.

The presentation of the TFM and the final presentation of the clinical case(s) will take place during this period.

Holidays: The Master follows the work schedule of the UB Dental Hospital: 5 weeks in August, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week at Easter.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Candidates will be selected based on their academic record, curriculum vitae, clinical experience, entrance exam, psychological test and personal interview.

 

CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS

Entrance exam and psychological test:

They will be held in person one day in the first week of October 2023.

Personal interviews:

Personal interviews will be held with candidates in person during the second and third week of October 2023, with the exception of candidates who come from far, whose interviews can be held on the same day of the exam.

 

ADMITTED CANDIDATES AND ENROLMENT

At the end of October, the result of the selection will be communicated to each candidate.

Admitted candidates will receive the instructions to enroll, as well as the payment term.
